Darrin Charles Yancey, 28, of Gary, has been charged after police allegedly found him driving while intoxicated with a 15-year-old passenger in his vehicle.

According to court documents, Crown Point police were dispatched around 12:39 p.m. on June 4 after receiving a report of a man drinking alcohol while in a drive-thru with a minor in the vehicle. Officers later located the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Main Street and 93rd Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.

Police reported observing signs of impairment, including bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage. Yancey allegedly agreed to perform field sobriety tests and showed multiple indicators of impairment.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Yancey submitted to a portable breath test that produced a result of 0.186. A certified chemical breath test later administered at the Lake County Jail reportedly measured his blood alcohol concentration at 0.174.

Investigators allege a 15-year-old passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the incident and that Yancey’s condition endangered another person.
