Tony Lee Hughes, 38, of Portage, is facing multiple felony charges after police  allege he took possession of a dog that did not belong to him, tied the animal to a stairwell and stabbed it numerous times, ultimately leading to its death.

According to court documents, Portage Police responded to the 600 block of Camelot Manor around 12:37 a.m. on June 6 after witnesses reported hearing a dog whining loudly. Witnesses told investigators they went to check on the animal and allegedly observed Hughes repeatedly stabbing a dog that was tied up and unable to escape. Witnesses reported the dog was not acting aggressively and that Hughes continued stabbing the animal while it was on the ground.

Court records state Hughes told police the dog had bitten him twice, which he claimed was the reason he stabbed it. Investigators reported, however, that Hughes showed no injuries, bruising or puncture wounds consistent with a dog bite. According to court documents, the dog suffered approximately 10 puncture wounds.

Police allege Hughes found the dog and brought it to his residence but made no effort to locate or contact the owner. Court records state Hughes then tied the dog to a stairwell and stabbed it, resulting in injuries described as catastrophic. Officers reportedly transported the dog for emergency veterinary treatment, but the animal ultimately had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries.

During the investigation, police reported finding Ziprasidone Hydrochloride pills inside an orange sweatshirt Hughes allegedly stated he had been wearing during the incident. Investigators alleged Hughes did not possess a valid prescription for the medication.

Police also reported locating two glass smoking pipes containing burnt residue and a marijuana grinder containing bits of green leafy material on Hughes at the time of his arrest.

Lodged in the Porter County Jail.
