Christopher B. Fulkerson, 27, of Hobart, has been charged in Lake County after police allege he fled from a sheriff’s deputy on a motorcycle, nearly struck a pedestrian, and was found in possession of methamphetamine and a handgun.

According to court documents, a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy was on patrol during the nighttime hours of June 28 when he spotted a black motorcycle traveling near the 1200 block of Ripley Street in Gary without working rear lights. Police allege the motorcycle then proceeded through a red light at Ripley Street and Melton Road before the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.

Court records state the motorcycle initially slowed before accelerating at a dangerous speed, allegedly fleeing from the deputy and at times traveling into oncoming traffic. Investigators allege the motorcycle nearly struck a pedestrian before reaching the Lake Street Beach area, where the rider laid the motorcycle down while attempting to turn around.

According to court documents, deputies took Fulkerson into custody and found a Walther P99 handgun directly beneath him. After being advised of his rights, Fulkerson allegedly told deputies there was “dope” in his wallet. Investigators reported finding two baggies containing approximately 1.3 grams of a crystal substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Court records also state investigators determined Fulkerson was out on bond in two separate pending felony cases and that his driver’s license was suspended with a prior driving while suspended conviction within the previous 10 years.
