South Shore Line passengers should prepare for another service adjustment beginning Tuesday, June 30, as crews continue repairing damage following last week’s freight train derailment near East Chicago.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) announced that the temporary bus bridge currently operating between Miller and Hegewisch will shift to a new location. Beginning Tuesday, buses will transport passengers between Hammond Gateway and East Chicago while train service continues on either side of the affected area.

Under the revised service plan, eastbound passengers will exit trains at Hammond Gateway, board buses to East Chicago, and then re-board South Shore trains to continue their trip. Westbound passengers will follow the reverse process, transferring from trains at East Chicago to buses bound for Hammond Gateway before continuing west by rail.

NICTD advises riders to expect delays associated with the bus substitution. Bicycles will not be permitted on the buses.

The South Shore Line will continue operating both its Lakeshore Corridor and Monon Corridor services on a weekend/holiday schedule through Friday, July 3. The same weekend/holiday schedule will also remain in effect for the Independence Day weekend on July 4 and 5.

According to NICTD, the temporary service changes remain necessary due to the June 24 freight train derailment and the resulting power loss near East Chicago. The derailment initially forced a complete suspension of South Shore service before trains resumed operating June 25 under a reduced weekend/holiday schedule with bus substitutions around the damaged area.

Officials say repair crews continue working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible, but no timetable has been announced for a full return to the regular weekday schedule. Passengers are encouraged to allow extra travel time while recovery efforts continue.
