A Chicago man has been arrested following an investigation into a shooting that began in Illinois and ended with a crash on eastbound Interstate 80/94 in Northwest Indiana Tuesday morning.

According to the Indiana State Police, detectives identified Austin L. Cortez, 27, of Chicago, as the suspect following an intensive investigation. Cortez was taken into custody Tuesday evening by the Illinois State Police and is currently being held at the Cook County Jail pending extradition to Indiana.

Indiana State Police said detectives will submit preliminary charges of Attempted Murder and Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Authorities emphasized that final charging decisions will be made by prosecutors.

The investigation began Tuesday morning when the Lowell Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a driver reporting they had been shot at multiple times while traveling in Illinois. According to investigators, the gunfire continued after the victim crossed into Indiana.

While attempting to escape the suspects, the victim crashed into the rear of a semi-truck on eastbound I-80/94 near Calumet Avenue.

Indiana State Police troopers, detectives, and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, shutting down multiple lanes of the interstate for several hours as they processed evidence. Despite the shooting and collision, authorities said neither the victim nor the semi-truck driver was injured.

All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
