A 43-year-old Union Township man was killed Saturday night following a crash involving a motor-driven cycle and a pickup truck at the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and Swanson Road in Portage.
According to the Portage Police Department, officers were dispatched to the intersection at approximately 9:13 p.m. on July 11 after receiving reports of a serious crash. Multiple 911 callers advised that an off-duty nurse had stopped at the scene and was performing CPR on the injured rider before emergency crews arrived.
Preliminary investigators determined that a 2015 GMC Sierra, driven by a 35-year-old Hobart man, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 6 through the intersection when a northbound 2015 Yamaha YW50 Zuma, a Class B motor-driven cycle, entered the intersection and struck the passenger side of the pickup.
The rider of the Yamaha, identified as Sean McLinn, 43, of Union Township, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to witness statements, the Yamaha disregarded the red traffic signal while traveling northbound on Swanson Road prior to the collision.
The driver of the GMC Sierra was not injured in the crash. Police said the driver showed no signs of impairment, and preliminary testing indicated there was no alcohol in the driver’s system.
Authorities said toxicology testing for McLinn is pending as part of the investigation.
The Portage Police Department extended its condolences to McLinn’s family and friends and thanked the off-duty nurse whose immediate lifesaving efforts provided aid before first responders arrived. Police also acknowledged the assistance of the Portage Fire Department and the Porter County Coroner’s Office during the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation.
