Humberto Vargas Oropeza, 34, is accused of using multiple identities and possessing a fictitious South Carolina driver’s license after a traffic stop in Jasper County.
According to court documents, the investigation began on July 11, 2026, when a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy conducting traffic enforcement near the intersection of County Road 1500 North and County Road 100 West observed a black passenger car allegedly disregard a stop sign. The deputy initiated a traffic stop between County Road 100 West and State Road 49.
Court documents state the driver advised he did not speak English. The deputy then spoke with him in Spanish and requested a driver’s license or identification. Investigators allege the driver said he did not have either and instead wrote down the name Humberto Vargas along with a date of birth of Jan. 20, 1992 on a piece of paper. A records check reportedly found no Indiana driver’s record matching the information provided.
According to court documents, the driver was detained and transported to the Jasper County Jail. During the booking process, corrections officers reportedly found a South Carolina driver’s license in his wallet bearing his photograph but identifying him as Jerome Louis Liberatore, with a date of birth of February 1985.
Investigators then checked the South Carolina driver’s license number and alleged it was actually assigned to Harryson Kensky Jean Baptiste. Court documents state the photograph on the driver’s license appeared distorted, leading investigators to believe the identification was fictitious.
Court documents further allege investigators determined Vargas Oropeza had previously been convicted in Porter County in 2025 of operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a driver’s license.
