A 37-year-old Illinois man was killed early Saturday morning after the vehicle he was riding in left the roadway and crashed into a high-tension electrical tower near Hebron, according to the Hebron Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 2:56 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, to the intersection of U.S. 231 and County Line Road for a report of a single-vehicle crash.

The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle left the roadway before striking a high-tension electrical tower.

The passenger, Martin McDermott, 37, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, was transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point, where he later died from his injuries. His identity was confirmed by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The driver suffered minor injuries, was treated at the hospital, and has since been released. Police are not identifying the driver at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.

The Porter County Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is assisting the Hebron Police Department with determining what caused the crash.

Investigators said toxicology results are pending, and the investigation remains active. Additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
