A 78-year-old Crown Point man has died after being struck by a motorcycle Saturday night on the city’s south side, according to the Crown Point Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 10:02 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, to the intersection of South Main Street and Las Olas Drive for a report of a serious vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash.

According to the preliminary investigation, a motorcycle was traveling northbound on South Main Street when it struck the 78-year-old man as he was crossing the roadway at the intersection.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. He later died from his injuries on Sunday, July 26. The Lake County Coroner’s Office determined the preliminary cause of death to be blunt-force trauma to the head.

The Lake County Coroner has identified the victim as Thomas Novotny, 78, of Crown Point.

Police said the motorcycle operator remained at the scene following the crash and is cooperating with investigators.

The South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team responded to assist the Crown Point Police Department in determining exactly how the crash occurred.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time.
