A man was killed Wednesday afternoon after becoming trapped beneath a large fallen tree in Porter County, according to a Sheriff’s Police report.

Officers were dispatched around 1:55 p.m. on July 29 to the 200 block of Furnessville Road to assist EMS with a death investigation. Before officers arrived, emergency personnel advised that the victim had already been pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, a witness told police that an unidentified Hispanic man approached him and two others asking for help after a large tree had fallen with the victim trapped underneath. The group attempted to lift the tree but was unable to free the victim.

The witness told investigators the unidentified man then attempted to cut part of the tree with a chainsaw. After calling 911, the witness said the man left the scene and did not return.

When officers arrived, they found the victim pinned beneath the large tree with fatal injuries. Deputies searched the area for the unidentified man who reportedly witnessed the incident but were unable to locate him.

The Porter County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene, took custody of the victim, and advised toxicology testing would be performed. An autopsy was also scheduled.

The victim’s truck was impounded pending further investigation.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending positive identification by the Porter County Coroner’s Office and notification of family.
