Deseray Quiana Brown, 28, of Gary, has been charged in Lake County after police allege she threw a cup of hot cooking grease into another woman’s face during a confrontation outside a home in the 3700 block of Jackson Street, leaving the victim with serious burns that required treatment at two hospitals, including one in Chicago.

According to court documents, Gary police responded to the residence at approximately 6:06 p.m. on July 21 after receiving a report of an aggravated battery. Officers found the victim suffering from severe burns to the left side of her face, neck, and upper chest. Paramedics at the scene believed she had sustained second-degree burns to portions of her face and first-degree burns to her chest and neck before transporting her to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Investigators said the victim had gone to the residence to speak with the father of her four children about plans for one of their daughter’s upcoming birthday. According to the affidavit, the victim said she was invited inside the residence before an argument developed between her and Brown, who was identified as the man’s current girlfriend. The victim told detectives the father of her children escorted her outside to continue their conversation in an effort to calm the situation.

Court documents allege Brown then exited the home carrying a pink cup filled with hot cooking oil. Investigators say Brown reached over the man’s shoulder and threw the hot grease directly into the victim’s face. The victim told detectives the grease immediately caused extreme pain and temporarily affected her vision before Brown allegedly fled through the back of the residence and escaped on foot.

A family member of the victim and the father of the victim’s children both told investigators they witnessed Brown throw the hot grease toward the victim. Both stated Brown fled immediately afterward. Detectives later interviewed the victim, who positively identified Brown in a photo lineup as the person who allegedly attacked her.

According to medical records cited in the affidavit, the victim suffered partial-thickness and full-thickness burns to her face, eyelid, nose, chin, neck, and upper chest. Treating physicians documented blistering and expressed concerns about permanent scarring. Because of the seriousness of the burns and complaints of blurred vision, she was transferred from a local hospital to a hospital in Chicago, where she was admitted to the burn intensive care unit for advanced wound care.
