LAKE COUNTY — Investigators believe a domestic dispute led to a fatal shooting Saturday evening at Karmic Sunshine, an antiques and accessories shop located at 2996 W. 181st Avenue in unincorporated Lake County near Hebron and Lowell.

According to an update Sunday from Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., preliminary information indicates an argument between a man and his girlfriend turned physical before gunfire erupted.

A 56-year-old woman was shot and died at the scene. Her 62-year-old boyfriend, identified by investigators as the suspected shooter, is believed to have subsequently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The deceased woman’s 24-year-old daughter was also present during the dispute. Investigators said she attempted to escape but was shot in the arm. She was transported to a Chicago hospital and was listed in stable condition.

The husband and young child of the 24-year-old woman were also present during the incident but were not injured.

Detectives have since learned that the suspected shooter and the owner of Karmic Sunshine had been living in a trailer behind the store.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is working to notify the suspected shooter’s family. Authorities said the identities of both the 56-year-old woman and the 62-year-old suspected shooter will be released at a later time.

Lake County police and Indiana State Police initially responded to the business shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday following reports of the shooting.

Authorities said Saturday night there was no remaining danger to the public.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those whose lives have been affected by yesterday’s tragic shooting,” Martinez said. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this heartbreaking incident in our prayers as this remains an ongoing investigation.”

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the shooting. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
