Haidi A. Guirguis, 38, of Park Forest, Illinois, was arrested after police allege she stole more than $220 worth of merchandise from a Merrillville CVS.
According to court documents, Merrillville Police were called to the CVS on East Lincoln Highway around 2:15 a.m. August 22 after a woman walked out of the store and activated its security sensors.
An officer arriving at the store allegedly saw Guirguis entering a Chevrolet Trax SUV. A store employee then identified her as the woman who had left with the merchandise.
Guirguis initially told police she had purchased a bottle of lotion and denied taking any additional products. After an officer said store employees had observed suspicious activity, Guirguis allegedly admitted stealing Rephresh vaginal gel valued at $27.99 and Softdisc menstrual discs valued at $18.49.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Guirguis said she “was on her menstrual cycle and is going through a lot of financial difficulties.”
Guirguis allegedly claimed the remaining merchandise inside her purse had been purchased from another CVS location in Portage. A Merrillville CVS employee scanned the products and told police the merchandise had not been purchased or scanned at that store.
The merchandise identified in the affidavit as stolen consisted of:
Four Finery perfume bottles, valued at $32.99 each
One Rephresh vaginal gel, valued at $27.99
One Softdisc menstrual discs package, valued at $18.49
One Kiss Core press on nails package, valued at $10.59
One Kiss Core toe nails package, valued at $10.59
One Vagisil pH suppositories package, valued at $22.99
The total value of the merchandise was listed as $222.61.
The employee also alleged Guirguis had previously taken merchandise from the store without being caught and asked police to prohibit her from returning to the property.
When officers instructed Guirguis to exit her vehicle, she allegedly said she could not go to jail because she cares for her elderly mother in Illinois and has three children.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
