Gregory Carroll Wiening, 53, of Dyer, faces charges in two separate cases alleging he stole computers from the same Schererville Walmart months apart.

According to court documents, the first theft occurred at approximately 4:24 p.m. Oct. 15, 2025, at the Walmart in the 1500 block of Indianapolis Boulevard.

Surveillance footage allegedly showed Wiening select a 22-inch HP desktop computer valued at $374, place it in a shopping cart and leave without paying. A worker checked a receipt as Wiening was leaving but reportedly did not verify its date, time or store number.

Wiening allegedly returned the following morning with a computer and receipt. A cashier determined the receipt was not from that Walmart location, at which point Wiening allegedly became nervous and left with the computer. He was seen departing in a gray Jeep, court documents state.

Police identified a possible suspect and vehicle, but a store employee could not initially identify Wiening with certainty.

Investigators said the break in the case came after another computer was stolen from the same Walmart on June 21, 2026.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Wiening allegedly entered the store, selected a pair of wire cutters and went to the electronics department. He is accused of cutting security cables from an HP desktop computer valued at $649 and leaving with it approximately eight minutes after entering.

A store employee followed Wiening outside and allegedly saw him enter a gray Jeep. Police traced the vehicle to Wiening and reported that his driver’s-license photograph matched the person seen on Walmart surveillance footage.

Investigators subsequently identified Wiening as the suspect in the October theft after comparing information from both incidents, including the suspect and vehicle allegedly used.

According to the affidavit, a prior-conviction search found Wiening was convicted of robbery in Lake County in 2011 and had two separate Lake County theft convictions entered in 2025. Those convictions were cited to support the felony enhancements in the new cases.

Lodged in the Lake County Jail on August 29, 2026.
