GARY — Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in downtown Gary that involved nine law enforcement officers and left a 67-year-old Gary man dead Friday night.

Detectives from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post were requested to investigate the shooting, which occurred Aug. 28 near the Gary Metro Center at Broadway and 4th Avenue.

According to Indiana State Police, Gary Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers responded at approximately 10:54 p.m. to a report of an armed security officer who was reportedly exhibiting unusual and erratic behavior.

Police said responding officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. At approximately 11:20 p.m., a confrontation occurred between the armed man and officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified him as Kenneth Williams, 67, of Gary.

The preliminary investigation determined that six Gary police officers and three Lake County Sheriff’s officers discharged their weapons during the confrontation.

Video recorded at the scene by videographer “Spin Diana” captured the sound of dozens upon dozens of gunshots during the incident. Following the shooting, Gary officers can be heard directing the videographer to leave the immediate area.

All nine officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with their respective agencies’ policies.

Indiana State Police said it will not identify the officers at this stage of the investigation and will defer the release of their names to the Gary Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

The circumstances leading up to the confrontation, including what prompted officers to open fire and the sequence of shots exchanged, remain under investigation.

Indiana State Police said no additional information is available at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing.
