A semi-truck driver was seriously injured early today after his vehicle sideswiped another semi stopped near the Burr Street exit ramp on eastbound I-80/94 in Gary, according to Indiana State Police.

Troopers responded to the two-vehicle crash at approximately 3:30 a.m. The preliminary investigation indicates a semi-truck hauling Amazon packages was stopped in the gore area, the berm between the ramp lane and the interstate travel lanes.

The driver of the parked semi, identified as 31-year-old Ahmed Taher Hussein Al Subari of Dearborn, Michigan, had reportedly exited the vehicle and was standing outside when another semi-truck sideswiped it.

The driver of the moving semi, identified as 33-year-old Garbiel Corral of Chicago, was ejected from his vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Northlake Hospital for emergency treatment.

Al Subari was not injured.

Eastbound lanes of I-80/94 were restricted for approximately eight hours while police investigated the crash and crews completed cleanup. The roadway was later fully reopened.

WAFFCO Towing and Recovery assisted at the scene. The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will continue supporting the investigation.
