Adrian Paris Jr., 58, of Hobart, faces multiple charges after court documents allege a disturbance involving an intoxicated man at the Comfort Inn in Portage escalated into a physical struggle that left an officer with a broken hand.

According to court documents, police were called to the Comfort Inn on September 4, 2026, regarding an intoxicated person who was reportedly belligerent and yelling at employees. Paris was allegedly upset because he could not get a room and began arguing with hotel employees and yelling.

When police arrived, Paris was sitting on a bench outside the hotel and loudly complaining about not being able to get a room, according to court documents. An officer attempted to explain that the hotel was without power and was unable to sell rooms. Paris allegedly responded, “I don’t give a fuck.”

Court documents state Paris then stood up and moved within a few feet of the officer. Police observed that Paris had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. He was also described as having a belligerent and abusive attitude.

Paris was asked to sit back down on the bench but allegedly refused, saying he was not going to sit down. When he was again told to sit while additional officers were on the way, Paris allegedly told the officer, “you should get backup officers.”

According to court documents, the officer believed Paris was about to become physically resistant and attempted to take him into custody. The officer shoved Paris in the chest with both hands to create space, causing Paris to fall backward onto the ground.

The officer then attempted to handcuff Paris, but Paris allegedly refused repeated commands to put his hands behind his back and tucked his arms underneath his stomach. Court documents state Paris continued resisting as the officer attempted to gain control of his hands.

During the struggle, Paris allegedly attempted to lift his head and get up while refusing commands to put his hands behind his back. Court documents allege Paris rolled around on the ground and flailed his arms as the officer attempted to take him into custody.

After another officer arrived, Paris was eventually handcuffed. Court documents state that once in custody, Paris continued being verbally abusive toward officers and loudly cursed even after being warned about disorderly conduct.

Police observed swelling developing under Paris’ right eye and minor scrapes to his head. EMS was called, and Paris was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being taken to the Porter County Jail.

The officer later sought medical treatment for pain in his right hand and learned the hand was fractured. Court documents allege the injury occurred during the struggle with Paris.
