NORTHWEST INDIANA — Indiana State Police troopers assigned to the Lowell Post made 24 criminal arrests and initiated three pursuits during a Labor Day weekend enforcement blitz along I-80/94.

Troopers working the late shift Saturday evening focused on speeding, impaired driving and aggressive motorists traveling the busy Northwest Indiana interstate corridor.

During the enforcement period, troopers conducted 77 traffic stops and issued 76 citations and 77 warnings. Of the citations issued, 46 were for speeding violations.

Police reported six reckless driving arrests, four arrests for operating while intoxicated and three drug arrests. Overall, troopers made 24 criminal arrests, including seven felony arrests.

Troopers also investigated six crashes during the operation, resulting in five crash-related citations.

In addition to traffic and criminal enforcement, troopers handled 27 calls for police service, including assisting stranded motorists with flat tires, vehicles that had run out of gas and other roadway-related problems.

“Our Troopers work hard every day to uphold our values of public safety in keeping our interstate roadways safe,” Lowell Post District Commander Lt. Terrance Weems said. “These numbers not only reflect enforcement, but a commitment to supporting our community by identifying dangerous driving behavior and taking appropriate action.”

Indiana State Police said the Lowell Post plans to continue proactive enforcement efforts aimed at reducing dangerous and impaired driving throughout Northwest Indiana.
