EAST CHICAGO — Robert Allison has been found guilty of murder in the 2023 shooting death of Christian Ogbomon inside an East Chicago apartment, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter announced Thursday.

The shooting occurred May 29, 2023, at an apartment in the 3700 block of Euclid Avenue. According to the probable cause affidavit, East Chicago Police arrived and found Ogbomon hanging across a balcony railing with a white sheet covering him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court documents allege Ogbomon had been visiting Allison’s daughter, Jayla, who told investigators she had met Ogbomon on Instagram about a month earlier.

According to the affidavit, Jayla told police Ogbomon climbed onto the second-floor balcony to enter her bedroom. The two were inside for approximately two hours when Allison allegedly entered the bedroom and shot Ogbomon.

Allison later spoke with investigators and acknowledged firing the gun, according to the affidavit. He allegedly told detectives he had returned to the apartment, heard screaming and demanded to know what was happening inside the bedroom.

Allison told investigators he attempted to push open the door while his daughter was telling him “no,” according to court documents. After forcing his way inside, Allison allegedly saw Ogbomon coming toward him and fired what he described to investigators as a “reaction.”

The affidavit states Allison was approximately 10 feet away when he fired. After the shooting, Allison allegedly heard his daughter say, “Oh dad I think you shot him,” before he called 911.

Allison’s son also told investigators he heard screaming from his sister’s bedroom followed by a gunshot, according to the affidavit. He allegedly saw his father holding a gun afterward and was instructed to call 911.

Following the investigation, Allison was charged with murder.

A jury has now found Allison guilty more than three years after the shooting.

“This type of prosecution requires a tremendous amount of preparation and cooperation,” Prosecutor Carter said. “I am grateful to our deputy prosecutor and to the law enforcement professionals who worked diligently to ensure the evidence was presented and that justice was served.”

Carter credited Deputy Prosecutor Bradley Carter for preparing and presenting the case and thanked the East Chicago Police Department and other criminal justice professionals involved in the investigation and prosecution.

Allison is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 7, 2026.
