LAKE COUNTY — A woman died after being ejected from an SUV during a crash involving a semi Sunday morning on I-80/94 near Burr Street, according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the eastbound lanes of I-80/94 near the 7 mile-marker for a crash involving a passenger vehicle and semi.

When troopers arrived, they found a 2016 Lincoln SUV overturned on its driver’s side in the south ditch. The female driver had been ejected and was found lying next to the vehicle.

Police said the woman was initially alert, conscious and able to speak with paramedics at the scene. Gary Fire Department personnel transported her to Northlake Hospital for emergency treatment.

A preliminary investigation indicates a semi traveling eastbound made contact with the Lincoln, with the semi’s front-left steer tire striking the rear passenger side of the SUV.

The impact caused the Lincoln to rotate to the right, and the driver lost control. The SUV then entered the south ditch, overturned and ejected the driver.

While at the hospital, the woman’s condition deteriorated. Despite life-saving efforts, she died from her injuries.

Her identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of family. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is expected to release her identity Monday morning.

Indiana State Police continue to investigate the crash, including what caused the initial contact between the semi and the Lincoln.
