Dorian Kevon Robertson, 22, of Joliet, is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Walmart employee on November 2, 2026, at the store in the 1100 block of 5th Avenue in Hammond. Police were called at approximately 9:01 a.m., according to a probable cause affidavit.
The affidavit says store surveillance showed Robertson arrive at about 8:40 a.m. and enter the store. At approximately 8:58 a.m., he was seen following the employee as she stocked shelves in an aisle. As she moved around a rolling cart, Robertson continued following close behind her.
At about 9 a.m., the employee moved the cart down the aisle while Robertson followed. The affidavit says she looked back as he approached in what appeared to be an aggressive manner. At the end of the aisle, Robertson pushed the cart from behind her and appeared to grab her when she turned around. They began fighting and both fell to the floor. A handgun appeared to fall from Robertson’s possession during the struggle.
The affidavit says the employee was on top of Robertson at one point, and both struck each other with closed fists. Robertson kicked her away, and another Walmart employee stepped between them. Robertson then walked back to the handgun, picked it up, pointed it at the employee and fired multiple rounds. Surveillance video showed him continue shooting while she was on the ground. The affidavit says video also showed flames on her upper body as she tried to stand.
A Walmart employee who witnessed the shooting told investigators she heard a struggle and saw Robertson pick up a handgun. She said she yelled warnings to employees and customers, then saw him approach the woman and fire. The witness said Robertson continued shooting while the employee was on the floor. She told investigators she did not hear a verbal argument before the physical altercation and did not know whether the two knew each other.
The employee who intervened had told investigators the woman said Robertson pushed her and was responsible for the altercation. That employee described the man as unknown to her and said she had not seen him before.
Robertson told investigators that he and the employee had been in an on-and-off relationship for several months. He said he went to the store to shop and speak with her about statements she had made. Robertson admitted pushing the cart she was using, but said she turned around and punched him. He claimed he hit his head when he fell and could not remember what happened afterward. When asked about the shooting, he said everything was “a blur,” according to the affidavit. Investigators said his claim that he could not remember what happened after falling was inconsistent with the surveillance video.
An off-duty security officer and an off-duty Whiting police officer searched the store after the gunfire. The security officer located Robertson, who surrendered and was detained. A handgun consistent with the weapon seen in the surveillance video was recovered nearby.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
