Makuri D. Sisson, 21, and Kavonna La Ray Moore, 21, both of Country Club Hills, Illinois, were charged following a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Hammond, according to court records.

According to court documents, an Indiana State Police trooper observed a gray Ford Fusion traveling approximately 90 mph in a posted 55 mph zone shortly after 1:13 a.m. on June 15. Police reported the vehicle had no registration plate and did not immediately yield after emergency lights and sirens were activated.

Court records state the vehicle contained Sisson, Moore, an adult rear-seat passenger, and a juvenile seated in a child restraint seat in the center rear seat.

According to court documents, troopers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and observed marijuana dispensary bags inside. Police also reported observing the rear-seat passenger repeatedly reaching into the area of the child’s car seat while Sisson and Moore looked toward the back seat.

During a search of the vehicle, troopers allegedly discovered a Glock 43X 9mm handgun concealed behind a loose trim panel near the front passenger seat.

Court documents state officers later found a loaded Glock 27 .40-caliber handgun with an extended magazine underneath an approximately 21-month-old child after the child climbed out of the car seat during the investigation.

Police reported a round was chambered in the firearm and noted the handgun did not have an external safety. According to court documents, the child had been sitting on top of the loaded firearm.

Court records state Sisson admitted the marijuana in the vehicle belonged to him. Investigators also reported that the rear-seat passenger later claimed ownership of the handgun found beneath the child and stated he did not know why he concealed it because he was legally allowed to possess a firearm.

According to court documents, Sisson told police he had two open felony cases in Illinois and knew he was not permitted to possess a firearm. Police also reported Sisson stated the Glock 43X belonged to Moore and that she carried it.

Court records state both Sisson and Moore told police they were the parents of the approximately 21-month-old child. The child was later released to a family member who responded to the scene.
