HAMMOND — A person of interest is in custody as Hammond Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 62-year-old man Tuesday morning.

According to the Hammond Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of 171st Place at approximately 6:55 a.m. on June 23 after receiving a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they located a 62-year-old male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. First responders rendered aid before the victim was transported to Community Hospital in Munster, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity as investigators work to positively identify him and notify his next of kin.

Police said a person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the victim and the person of interest were known to one another.

Investigators emphasized that, based on information gathered thus far, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.

The Hammond Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
