CHESTERTON — A South Shore Line station worker was carjacked at gunpoint Saturday morning at the Dune Park Station in Chesterton, leading to a police pursuit that ended in a crash in Gary and the arrest of one juvenile suspect, according to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) Transit Police.
The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, when Chesterton Police received a report from a man cleaning the South Shore Line’s Dune Park Station at 33 East U.S. 12. According to NICTD Transit Police, the worker told officers he was confronted by two males armed with a handgun, who stole his Ford Maverick pickup truck.
Police said the stolen truck was driven to the west side of the station parking lot, where two additional males got into the vehicle before the group fled westbound.
The vehicle was later spotted by Portage Police traveling west on U.S. 12. Officers attempted to stop the truck, but the driver refused to pull over, resulting in a pursuit. Authorities said the truck continued westbound at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway and crashing into a light pole at the intersection of U.S. 12 and Melton Road in Gary.
Following the crash, four males fled the vehicle on foot into a nearby neighborhood.
A break in the case came after a worker at a nearby McDonald’s on Lake Street contacted police, reporting that one of the males involved in the crash had entered the restaurant. Officers responded and took the juvenile male into custody without incident.
The juvenile was transported to the Porter Police Department for processing. Investigators said surveillance video obtained during the investigation captured all four juveniles allegedly involved in the armed vehicle theft at Dune Park Station.
The remaining three juvenile suspects have not yet been located, and the investigation remains active.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the NICTD Transit Police 24-hour tip line at (219) 398-6000.
