GARY — A heavy police presence is unfolding tonight following reports of an active shootout in Gary.
According to initial radio traffic, officers in the area of 6th Avenue and Gordon Hatcher (Grant) first reported hearing dozens of gunshots to their east around 10 PM. Multiple 911 calls quickly followed, with callers describing a “shootout” in progress.
The scene has since been identified near 6th Avenue and Van Buren Street, where officers arriving reported active gunfire upon arrival.
Urgent radio transmissions captured the intensity of the situation, with officers stating:
• “Active gunshots! Active gunshots! Two gangs shooting at each other!”
• “We need units! We need units now!”
• “We’re taking shots — multiple suspects shooting towards us!”
Authorities indicate that several suspects remained at large, and the situation remains fluid as additional units respond to the area.
Despite the chaos, no officers were struck by gunfire and no known injuries to involved parties.
