A swimmer has died after a large-scale water rescue operation Sunday evening at Gary Beach, according to the Gary Fire Department.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 7:34 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, to the beach area near 1 North Grand Boulevard after reports that a swimmer had gone missing in Lake Michigan. The swimmer had reportedly last been seen about 20 minutes before first responders arrived.

Firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, and regional rescue teams immediately launched an extensive search along the shoreline and in the water. Assisting agencies included the Gary Police Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, Lake County Dive Team, and the Lake County Sheriff’s helicopter.

The victim was eventually located and brought to shore, where emergency personnel began CPR and advanced life support measures. The swimmer was transported to a local hospital but later died from their injuries.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” said Gary Fire Chief Larry Tillman. “The successful coordination of multiple public safety agencies highlights the importance of regional partnerships during water rescue emergencies. We commend all responding personnel for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork under challenging conditions.”

Chief Tillman also urged residents and visitors to only enter the water when lifeguards are on duty and to remain aware of changing lake conditions.

The Gary Fire Department is reminding the public that Lake Michigan can become dangerous very quickly, with strong currents, rip currents, changing wave conditions, and rapidly shifting weather creating life-threatening situations for even experienced swimmers.

The identity of the victim has not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
