Crews and residents are working to clean up and recover belongings after a possible tornado touched down around 1 p.m. near 192nd Street and Oakwood Avenue in Lansing.

Village officials are coordinating with ComEd, mutual aid first responders from neighboring communities, and the American Red Cross to assist affected residents.

Preliminary information indicates more than a dozen homes sustained significant damage, with several losing their roofs or being heavily damaged. Despite the widespread destruction, only two injuries have been reported. One woman suffered a bump to the head, while another person is believed to have sustained a broken wrist. Given the extent of the damage, officials say the community was fortunate there were no more serious injuries.

Region News Source spoke with one resident who was upstairs when a tornado warning appeared on her television. As she made her way downstairs, the roof was torn from the home and the walls collapsed, leaving the house a total loss.

As the storm moved through the area, roofing shingles, insulation, and other debris from Lansing was carried into neighboring Munster, where it fell from the sky.

We are awaiting an update from the mayor on the number of displaced residents, restoration efforts, and available assistance for those impacted.
