Ryan Ladarius Holmes, 34, of Lake Station, allegedly led police on a high-speed chase with two children inside his truck before backing into a police vehicle.

According to court documents, Portage police observed a Toyota Tacoma traveling approximately 100 mph in a posted 45 mph zone near U.S. 20 and County Line Road around 11:07 p.m. August 21. The truck was allegedly weaving through traffic and crossing the center line.

Police activated their emergency lights and siren and pursued the truck westbound on U.S. 20. According to the probable cause affidavit, the patrol vehicle reached 126 mph but was unable to gain ground on the truck.

The driver allegedly made an unsafe U-turn near Old Hobart Road and continued toward Lake Station. Police followed the truck until it stopped at a residence in the 900 block of Marion Place.

According to court documents, Holmes backed the truck into the front yard and collided with the front of the patrol vehicle. Police said Holmes then refused commands to get on the ground and continued walking toward an officer despite receiving multiple warnings.

After Holmes was taken into custody, police discovered two children in the back seat who were allegedly not wearing seat belts.

Police reported observing signs of intoxication and alcoholic beverage containers inside the truck. Holmes allegedly refused field sobriety and chemical testing. Court documents indicate a warrant was obtained for a blood draw.
