LAKE COUNTY — Four people, including two Illinois teenagers and a wanted felon, were arrested after a two-state police pursuit late Friday night that began with Chicago authorities tracking a fleeing vehicle and ended in Calumet City.

According to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., a Chicago Police Department helicopter had been tracking the vehicle after it fled from officers in Illinois.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers later stopped the vehicle near Burr Street and I-80 in Gary, but the driver allegedly took off again just before 10 p.m.

Police said the driver fled westbound on I-80 and sideswiped another vehicle traveling on the interstate during the pursuit.

The chase eventually ended in Calumet City after the suspect vehicle jumped a curb near River Oaks Drive and Park Avenue and came to a stop.

All four occupants bailed out of the vehicle and ran from officers, according to police. All four were subsequently taken into custody. Investigators also recovered a handgun from a backpack found near the scene.

The driver was identified by police as a 26-year-old Merrillville man who had several active warrants, including warrants involving felony theft, battery and strangulation.

During his apprehension, the driver was bitten by a police K-9 and transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The three passengers included a 28-year-old Lafayette man and two 17-year-old boys. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the passengers were expected to be cited and released from the Calumet City Police Department.

“I’d like to thank all of the police officers who worked together to safely stop this driver,” Martinez said.

The incident involved law enforcement cooperation across state lines and remains the latest pursuit involving Northwest Indiana officers and suspects fleeing between Indiana and Illinois.
