Alfonza Lee Wylie, 36, of Markham, Illinois, is facing multiple felony charges after police said he chased his ex-girlfriend through Hammond streets, rammed her vehicle, smashed her driver’s side window with a shoe, assaulted her and then fled from officers before running out of gas Tuesday morning.
According to court documents, Hammond police responded around 9:21 a.m. Tuesday to the area of 175th Street and Chestnut Avenue for reports of a battery in progress involving a red Dodge Durango and a blue passenger vehicle. Dispatchers were advised a woman had allegedly been run off the road and attacked by the driver of the Durango.
Witnesses told police they observed the Durango strike the woman’s vehicle while she was still inside and saw a man physically assaulting her during the confrontation.
Police said officers arrived in the area and observed the red Dodge Durango fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. Officers initiated a pursuit as the vehicle traveled through Hammond streets, allegedly disregarding stop signs and traffic control devices. Court documents state the pursuit continued until the SUV ran out of gas in the 1600 block of 175th Street, where Wylie was taken into custody.
Investigators said the victim told police she noticed Wylie, her ex-boyfriend, following her in the Durango shortly before the incident. According to the affidavit, Wylie allegedly drove alongside her vehicle while traveling in opposing traffic lanes and screamed for her to stop so they could talk. When she refused, police said he repeatedly rammed her vehicle until she pulled over near 175th Street and Chestnut Avenue.
Court documents state Wylie exited the SUV and demanded the woman get out of her vehicle. When she refused, investigators allege he grabbed a black shoe from his vehicle and used it to shatter the driver’s side window. Police said Wylie then reached through the broken window and strangled the woman while she sat in the driver’s seat before attempting to pull her from the vehicle.
According to investigators, Wylie also allegedly grabbed the woman’s cellphone and removed her car keys from the ignition before fleeing as officers approached. Police later recovered both the cellphone and keys inside Wylie’s vehicle. The black shoe allegedly used to break the window was also recovered near the scene.
Police said photographs taken during the investigation showed heavy damage to the victim’s vehicle, including a broken driver’s side window and damage to the front driver’s side fender. Investigators also documented cuts to the woman’s arm, bruising and discoloration on her arm, and markings around her neck consistent with strangulation, according to court documents.
During a recorded interview with investigators, police said Wylie admitted following the woman after becoming upset over social media posts involving her and another man. Court documents state Wylie admitted using a shoe to break the vehicle window, taking the woman’s keys and cellphone, and fleeing from police because he was scared. He also acknowledged officers recovered the victim’s property from inside his vehicle, according to the affidavit.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
