GARY — At approximately 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Gary Fire Department was dispatched to the area of 100 North Broadway near the railroad tracks for a report of an individual who had apparently been struck by a train, according to the Gary Fire Department.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met by the train conductor, who directed crews to a location near the former Gary train station.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene along with Amtrak Police Department and Norfolk Southern Police Department. After investigators completed their on-scene documentation, Gary Fire Department personnel assisted with the recovery of the deceased.

The identity of the individual, as well as the cause and manner of death, remain under investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the appropriate law enforcement agencies. We will update this article as more information comes in.
