The Lake County Sheriff’s Department has officially assumed police responsibilities for the Town of New Chicago as federal authorities reportedly investigate matters tied to the New Chicago Police Department.
Sheriff Oscar Martinez confirmed Friday night that his department has assumed all police services, including patrol operations, emergency response, and service calls, while the situation remains under investigation.
The sheriff did not provide additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the investigation, citing the ongoing investigation. However, Martinez stated there is “no need for the citizens of New Chicago to worry about police services.”
Sources told Region News Source this afternoon that federal warrants were served earlier Friday involving the New Chicago Police Chief, who was reportedly taken into custody outside of Indiana by federal authorities. Numerous search warrants are also believed to have been executed in the area.
Officials have not yet released details regarding the investigation or charges, if any. Region News Source is continuing to work to independently verify information as it becomes available.
