Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred just after midnight Tuesday on eastbound I-80/94 near mile marker 2.4 at Indianapolis Boulevard, just east of the Indiana/Illinois state line.

According to Indiana State Police, police activity remains active in the area and there is no ongoing threat to the public. All eastbound lanes are currently closed with traffic being diverted at Calumet Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard. The left two westbound lanes are also affected. Authorities say this will be an extensive road closure and motorists should seek alternate routes and use caution near the scene.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez stated the Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to assist Indiana State Police during a traffic stop when shots were fired, prompting the officer-involved shooting investigation.

Sheriff Martinez confirmed two Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers were not wounded but were transported to an area hospital for evaluation. Both are expected to be medically cleared and placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy and procedure.

Indiana State Police are the lead investigative agency. Additional information has not yet been released.
