CROWN POINT — A suspicious device discovered Wednesday morning on the property of a Crown Point bank prompted a response from local police, K-9 units, and bomb technicians before authorities determined there was no danger to the public.
According to the Crown Point Police Department, officers were dispatched around 9 a.m. on June 10 to First Savings Bank of Hegewisch, located at 1531 E. South St., after a landscaping crew found a suspicious device on the property.

Police immediately secured the area and requested assistance from explosive detection K-9 teams as well as the Porter County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad.
After examining the device, bomb technicians determined it was not an explosive. Investigators identified it as a smoke-producing device. The item was safely secured, removed from the property, and will be destroyed.
No injuries were reported, and officials said there was no immediate threat to the public.
Authorities are continuing to investigate how the device ended up on the bank’s property.
