Louis Clyde Conyer, 58, of Gary, has been charged after police alleged a traffic stop for multiple traffic violations led to the discovery of approximately 45 grams of suspected crack cocaine packaged for sale and suspected ecstasy pills.

According to court records, officers assigned to the Lake County High Crime Unit were patrolling near 35th Avenue and Georgia Street at approximately 10:55 p.m. on July 24 when they observed a Buick passenger car following another vehicle too closely. Police alleged the driver committed several traffic violations while officers attempted to catch up, including changing lanes without signaling multiple times, traveling approximately 40 mph in a 30 mph zone, and making additional turns without using a turn signal before a traffic stop was initiated near 23rd Avenue and Broadway. 

Police said Conyer told officers he was hurrying to 21st Avenue and Grant Street because he needed to get to his wife. According to court records, Conyer said she was pregnant and, when asked if she was in labor, replied that she was “showing signs.” During the stop, officers noticed Conyer’s belt was undone and his shorts were unbuttoned. Police said when they repeatedly asked why his pants were undone, Conyer initially stared at the officer without responding. After being asked a third time, he allegedly said he had needed to use the bathroom and had urinated while driving. When asked if he had urinated on himself, Conyer replied that he had and stated he was diabetic. Investigators wrote they observed no visible signs that his shorts were wet and noted that Conyer was breathing heavily throughout the encounter. 

According to court documents, after checking Conyer’s driver’s license, officers returned and told him that if he was honest and upfront about what he had, he would not be taken to jail. Police said Conyer responded that all he had in the vehicle was beer. When asked if he had any drugs, he allegedly replied, “No,” adding that he “only drinks.” As officers opened the driver’s door and asked him to step out, police alleged Conyer repeatedly reached beneath the driver’s seat before claiming he was only reaching for a beer can. Officers also said he repeatedly reached toward his pants despite being instructed several times to keep his hands on the vehicle while they conducted a pat-down. 

While conducting the pat-down, officers said they observed a crushed white rock-like substance on the driver’s seat in plain view. Police told Conyer they could clearly see what they believed was cocaine and asked how much more he had. According to the affidavit, Conyer responded that it was not cocaine and denied it had been there. Officers then searched the vehicle and reported finding an open Miller Lite can beneath the driver’s seat and multiple bags containing suspected crack cocaine inside the center console. Investigators alleged the drugs were packaged in a manner consistent with distribution. Police said the suspected cocaine field-tested positive and weighed approximately 45 grams. Officers also recovered five orange and pink fish-shaped pills that reportedly field-tested positive for ecstasy.

Court records state a woman identified as Conyer’s wife arrived during the investigation. When officers asked whether she was pregnant, she reportedly replied that she was not and asked why they would ask. Police then advised her that Conyer had stated she was pregnant. According to the affidavit, after officers told Conyer he was going to jail for dealing cocaine, he claimed he did not know the drugs were in the vehicle and that someone had put them there.
