Bomb Squad Called Out To Meijer Parking Lot

On Friday, 09/03/2021 at approximately 12:40pm, Merrillville Police officers were dispatched to Meijer at 611 W 81st Avenue in reference to a suspicious item left in a shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot, according to Assistant Chief Kosta Nuses.

The item, a pressure cooker, was sealed and it’s contents could not be seen, Nuses stated. Being that pressure cookers have been known to be used in past as improvised explosive devices, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department Explosive Disposal Unit was notified and arrived shortly after. Using specialized X-ray equipment, they were able to determine it wasn’t an explosive device. The call was cleared without further incident.

“I wasn’t taking any chances and placing the public or my officers in danger.  That’s why we called the pros when it comes to explosives,” Kosta said.
