Officers were advised by dispatch that a male subject was hitting a female and then fled the area.  Upon Officers arrival, a neighbor approached and stated that the neighbor, later identified as 40-year-old William Moore, had thrown a brick through his window.  The neighbor stated that a female had been hitting his door screaming for help.

Upon entering the residence, Officers found the female (victim) had bruising under her eye, blood on her shirt and lacerations on both her arms.  Cedar Lake Medics arrived and rendered aide to the female.  Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate Mr. Moore.

Approximately 30 minutes after leaving the scene, Officers received another call from the victim whom stated that Mr. Moore had called her and was on his way back.  Mr. Moore told victim that he was carrying a knife and would hurt Police Officers and himself if they tried to arrest him.

Officers surrounded the area, with the assistance of Lake County Sheriff’s Department.  Officer Shaun Meyer utilized the Cedar Lake Police Department’s FLIR Optic night vision, which had been attained on a grant to assist Police in searching low lite areas.  Officer Meyer advised that he was able to smell the odor of a burnt cigarette to locate Mr. Moore, laying in the woods near the railroad tracks and notified Officers.

Upon approaching Mr. Moore, Officers observed him waving a knife in the air.  Mr. Moore continued to wave the knife in the air, telling Officers to shoot him.  Officers from Lake County Sheriff’s Department again ordered him to drop the knife and again Mr. Moore stated, “shoot me”.  Mr. Moore then fled towards the railroad tracks.  Officers pursued Mr. Moore and were able to get close enough to utilize a Taser stopping Mr. Moore on the railroad tracks.  When Mr. Moore was tased, he dropped the knife, but Officers were not able to see where it had landed.  Mr. Moore continued to fight with Officers, pushing Officers away.  Officer Meyer then utilized pepper spray on Mr. Moore, which allowed Police to take Mr. Moore into custody.  Mr. Moore was treated by the Cedar Lake Fire Department for the pepper spray and was transported to the Lake County Jail.

Chief Fisher praised the work of Officer Meyer, Officer Bradley Kamstra and Corporal Ryan Miller, along with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department with their assistance in locating and taking Mr. Moore into custody.

  1. Respect is reserved for those who have earned it. Mr Moore should be referred to as the assailant, offender, or perpetrator.
