Crews Battling A Large Brush Fire In Calumet Township

Multiple agencies from across Lake County are currently battling a smoldering Peat Moss / Cat Tails fire near Lake Ridge School on 41st & Hendricks on Christmas morning. The smoldering fire which is partially underground in a heavily wooded area is making it difficult to get water on. The Lake County Sheriff brought in their UH1H Huey Helicopter which they are using with the Bambi Bucket to douse the areas smoking in efforts to aid the Fire Departments.

Crews from Crown Point, Schererville, Lake Ridge, St. John, Griffith, Highland, Lake Hills, Merrillville, Dyer, Lake Station, Lake Dale, Answorth, Superior, Elite Ambulance, Lake County Sheriff, and Local EMA could be seen working the area as of noon. We will have updates as we talk to command staff this afternoon.

Update – One Firefighter was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
