East Chicago Man Wanted For Double Homicide
On 10/13/2021 at approximately 12:23 p.m. East Chicago Police Officers were dispatched to 1211 W. 149th Street in reference to a vehicle striking a house, according to Deputy Chief Jose Rivera. Officers arrived on scene and located a Silver Chevy Impala that appeared to have struck the front porch of 1211 W. 149th Street.
Officers approached the vehicle and observed the female driver to be unconscious and unresponsive. The female driver was identified as 43 year old Nalisha Martin of Hammond, Indiana and was later pronounced deceased at a Chicago area hospital, Rivera stated. Officers also located a male subject across the street lying in a pool of blood who was unconscious and unresponsive as well. The male subject was identified as 52 year old Christopher Burks of Chicago, Illinois and was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital.
While Officers were still on scene they were advised by dispatch that a third gunshot victim was down the street on the 4800 block of Walsh Avenue. The third gunshot victim was conscious and responsive, but was uncooperative with Officers. He was identified as 19 year old Gary Shanklin Jr. of East Chicago. He was transported to the University of Chicago in serious but stable condition.
East Chicago Police Criminal Investigation Division established through their investigation that Gary Shanklin Jr. was responsible for the deaths of both victims Nalisha Martin and Christopher Burks. On October 18, 2021 Det. Pena filed 2 counts of Felony Murder against Gary Shanklin Jr of East Chicago. Gary Shanklin is known to frequent the 4800 block of Walsh Avenue.
