EC Police Charge Man With Murder From July Shooting

On July 23, 2022 at approximately 9:33 PM, East Chicago Police Officers were on the 4800 block of Melville Avenue on an assault call. While on scene Officers heard approximately 8 shots fired coming from the 4800 block of Alexander Avenue, which was around the block from where they were. Officers returned to their police cars and proceeded to the 4800 block of Alexander Avenue. As Officers proceeded to 4800 Alexander Avenue, ShotSpotter alerted to 8 rounds in front of 4848 Alexander Avenue. 

As Officers arrived on scene they observed a male subject lying in the road just north of 4848 Alexander Avenue. Officers approached the male subject and observed that he had a gunshot wound to the chest area. The male subject was breathing slow and not responding to Officers. Medics arrived on scene and transported the male subject to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment.

The male subject subsequently succumbed to his wound at the emergency room and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The victim was identified at the hospital by family as 27 year old Shaquille K. Russel of Indianapolis.   The Criminal Investigation Division was called out to the scene to investigate the homicide and process the scene.

On Monday August 22, 2022 Detective Daniel Ponce filed 1 count of Level 1 Felony Murder against 34 year old Glenn C. Keller Jr. for the murder of Shaquille K. Russel. 

Glenn C. Keller Jr. was picked up by the EC Uniform Patrol Division on an unrelated East Chicago warrant and drug charge on Friday August 19, 2022. Suspect is currently in custody at the Lake County Jail.
