Hammond Police Investigating Homicide

Hammond Police have confirmed they are investigating an early morning homicide Thursday on the 3600 block of Sheffield Ave in the Sheffield Estates Mobile Home Park, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of the Hammond Police. The Lake County Coroner has identified the victim as Sylvia Williams, 55, of Hammond. The Coroner stated she succumbed to gun shot wounds at Franciscan Hammond. Ms. Williams was the victim of a previous shooting at the same location in November of 2019. Investigators are attempting to determine if the two cases are related.

On November 1, 2019 Hammond police also responded to the 3600 block of Sheffield Ave. (Sheffield Estates) in reference to a shooting. Officers located a 53-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her stomach and her leg. The victim stated that she was involved in a domestic argument with a male when he fired a weapon at her. 

The suspect, Charles Goforth, was taken into custody in Independence, Missouri for attempted murder, Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Indiana Police Department told Region News. The apprehension was made possible with the assistance of the Us Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

Court Records show Goforth was extradited back to Lake County on 11/14/2019 for the attempted murder charge, then bonded out of Lake County on 11/26/2019. On December 11th Goforth was granted permission to reside in Missouri by Magistrate Bokota with the next hearing scheduled on February 7, 2020.

UPDATE – Update: A person of interest in this homicide has been taken into custody. Additional details to follow as soon as possible.

  1. How the hell can someone bond out for an attempted murder? I realize that the law allows bond for most offenses. But attempted murder? This only allowed him to finished the job.
