Highland Business & Home Totaled In Sunday Morning Fire

Sunday morning around 8:15 AM, Highland Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 2739 Highway Ave at Traditions Restaurant in Downtown Highland.

On arrival crews were met with flames and heavy smoke. An apartment above the restaurant was occupied by two people at the time of the fire and they were able to escape without injury. Highland Fire Officials stated the building took heavy damage and is now uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is believed to have started near the rear top of the building according to the occupants of the apartment.

Traditions employed around 25 people at the restaurant and has been under new ownership for the past year. The owner who is out of town on business was not immediately available for comment.

As of 11 AM crews are still on scene investigating and working hot spots in overhaul.

Assisting the Highland Fire Department on scene was Munster, Griffith, Lake Ridge, Indiana State Fire Marshal and Superior Ambulance. There was one minor injury from a possible electric burn to a worker on the roof.
