Hobart Officer Spots Man With Rifle At Gas Station Leading To Stand Off

On June 3, 2021 officers were briefed about a black Dodge Journey being involved in recent car-jacking’s in other jurisdictions, according to Hobart Police.

At approximately 2:15 AM, Officer J. Havens of The Hobart Police was on routine patrol and drove past the Citgo gas station located at 4575 W. 37th Avenue in Hobart, where he saw a black Dodge Journey parked at one of the pumps. While driving past he observed three males walking toward the gas station from a vehicle, one wearing all black and carrying a rifle and another wearing a face mask. Ofc. Havens believing a robbery was in progress, took a position at the perimeter of the business and observed two of the males had entered the business and one was still outside. Additional Offices arrived and the male whom was outside followed officers commands and was taken into custody.

The other suspects who were still inside the business, one known to have a rifle, did not exit the business with Officers commands. Officers set a perimeter of the business and Northwest Regional Swat was called out at 2:23 AM as there was still two offenders inside the business with the clerk. With the assistance of a family member of one of the suspects inside the business who was also on the scene, the other two suspects came out and were taken into custody without incident at approximately 2:47 AM. Northwest Regional SWAT did a check of the business and found an AR-15 style rifle inside. The clerk was found unharmed.

There are currently three suspects in custody with the incident and their information will be released upon formal charges being filed as the investigation is ongoing, Hobart Police told RNS. The suspects in-custody are a 19 year old male from Gary, 19 year old male from East Chicago and a 21 year old male from Gary.

Hobart Police thanked for the Gary Police Department, Lake Station Police Department, Merrillville Police Department, Indiana State Police Department and members of Northwest Regional SWAT for bringing this to a peaceful ending.
