Hobart Police Chase Ends With K9 Bite Off I-65
On June 13, 2021, at approximately 12:15AM, Hobart Officers conducted a traffic stop on a black colored BMW in the area of 37th Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive, according to Captain James Gonzales of The Hobart Police.
During the traffic stop, Officers asked the driver of the vehicle to step out, but he refused to comply.
The driver of the vehicle grabbed his gear shifter and placed it into drive and drove away from the traffic stop, Gonzales told RNS. Officers followed the suspect with their lights and sirens activated, the suspect drove eastbound to the I-65 southbound ramp, and he drove southbound on I-65 at a high rate of speed.
Officers continued to follow the suspect and he exited the off ramp at Route 30 and I-65 at a high rate of speed, as he was exiting, he lost control of the car and drove off the embankment on the west side of the ramp.
The suspect exited his vehicle and ran from the vehicle towards the Radisson Hotel property. Officers exited their vehicles and pursued the suspect on foot. The K-9 Officer ordered the suspect to stop several times, but the suspect continued to flee from the Officers. The K-9 Officer deployed his partner as the suspect began to scale the chain link fence, the K-9 grabbed ahold of the suspect by his buttocks, and he was pulled down to the ground. The suspect continued to resist and attempted to break free from the K-9. Officers were able to gain control of the suspect and the K-9 Officer ordered his partner to release from the suspect.
Officers recovered a black 9mm Glock from the floorboard of the suspect’s vehicle that was fully loaded with an extended drum magazine. The suspect is identified as a 23-year-old male with an address listed in Gary, Indiana.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
The following charges were presented to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office:
Resisting Law Enforcement by a Motor Vehicle Level 6 Felony
Carrying a Handgun Without Being Licensed- Class A Misdemeanor
2 Counts of Resisting Law Enforcement- Class A Misdemeanor
Criminal Recklessness- Class A Misdemeanor
Reckless Driving- Class B Misdemeanor
