House Fire In Schererville Displaces Officer And Family

The Schererville Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Theresa Drive and Bluff Drive. On arrival crews found heavy smoke and flames through the roof of a home. Firefighters were made aware that a Schererville Police Officer resides at this residence. The officer and her family were able to exit safely, Deputy Chief Jeff Cook of The Schererville Police told RNS . The damage from the fire was extensive and the family was displaced as a result, Cook said.

Crews were still on scene at 8pm clearing the scene and dousing hot spots. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“We as a department, along with our Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, will be providing whatever assistance the officer and officer’s family may need in the coming days and weeks to get through this,” Cook stated.

Schererville Fire Department was assisted by Griffith Fire, Highland Fire, Lake Hills Fire, St. John Fire, Dyer Fire, and Munster Fire.

  1. It is not my intention to talk against the Schererville Fire dept but based on what I viewed of this house fire response, it was closer to 5:30 it had to of started because at 5:45 I looked out my kitchen window to see the fire truck in front of the house. They seemed to be struggling to get the hose off the roof of the truck in order to get it hooked up to a fire hydrant.
Then the water was turned on and shot out under the truck before being turned off and connected to the hose. A good 10 – 15 min went by that the house was smoking and turned into heavier smoke and flames.
Based on what I viewed as a by stander it would be very important for every home to invest in a fire extinguisher or 2. A small fire can turn into your house burning down in a matter of moments. Can’t say enough urgency was seen by anyone involved on the fire truck.
Was any fire fighter informed that 2 dogs were still left in the house? That is a question that is very concerning to me as I would never leave a pet in my house and save myself. That pet would be located quickly and removed to be with me when I got out of the house.
God rest their souls. The only dog that made must have been hooked up outside already since a 3rd husky survived.
Correction on the other towns that came to help – you forgot St. John. They were one of the first on site if not the first one.
