Winfield Adds New Police Officer And Awards Others Tuesday

On Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at the Winfield Town Council Meeting, Sam Steward was sworn-in as the newest member of the Winfield Police Department, Town Marshal Dan Ball said Wednesday.

Sam Steward is a graduate of Lowell High School and still lives in the Lowell area. Steward previously worked for the Schneider and New Chicago Police Department’s. Steward graduated from the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 2019.

“Steward’s hiring brings the department back up to five full-time officers after the departure of Deputy Kovacik who joined the Canadian National Railroad Police in March,” Ball said.

Also during the meeting, Deputies Moore and Benton, and K9 Tank, were recognized with Outstanding Achievement Awards for their role in the capture of three subjects who were suspected of burglarizing vehicles in the Stony Run subdivision in the early morning hours of April 18, 2020. Deputy Benton was also recognized for his leadership since joining the department in June of 2017. Benton was promoted to the rank of Sergeant effective immediately, Ball stated. Congratulations to all the officers from RNS.
