Man Wanted For Attempted Murder Stopped With Rifle & Pistol
On July 26, 2021 at approximately 9:37 p.m. Officer Qureshi with the East Chicago Police initiated a traffic stop at 1416 E. Columbus Drive on a silver Chevy Impala for having an inoperable headlight. Officer Qureshi made contact with the driver of the vehicle who was identified as 27 year old Michael D. McCualey of Gary, Indiana. The driver advised Officer Qureshi that he had his “pipes” (slang for firearms) on him.
Officer Qureshi observed a rifle on the front passenger floor and a semi-automatic handgun between the driver seat and center console. Officer Qureshi had the driver step out of his vehicle. During the traffic stop it was discovered that Michael D. McCualey had an outstanding Lake County Warrant for a Level 1 Felony Attempted Murder. Officer Qureshi placed the driver under arrest without incident and recovered the following weapons and ammunition from the drivers vehicle which were in plain view:
- AR-556 rifle loaded with 50 live rounds
- 9mm Springfield semi-automatic handgun loaded. with 48 live rounds in an extended magazine.
- 2 additional magazines with 16 live rounds in each of them.
The driver was charged with gun no permit and the Attempted Murder Warrant was served.
