Merrillville LPR System Praised After Catching Another Stolen Car Saturday
Merrillville Police received a stolen vehicle hit out of Illinois on the License Plate Readers (LPR) at 61st & I-65, according to Assistant Chief Kosta Nuses. The vehicle was used in crimes in Illinois as well, Nuses said.
A Merrillville officer located the stolen vehicle in the 7100 block of Broadway. When the officer attempted to get behind the vehicle it took off, police said. Merrillville Officers gave chase from Broadway onto westbound 73rd. The subjects continued to flee at a high rate of speed till it collided with another vehicle at 73rd & Buchanan. The collision disabled the vehicle and the driver was taken into custody. There were no reported injuries from the crash.
“The LPR system is proving to be worth it’s weight in gold,” Nuses told RNS Saturday. “Bad guys can’t hide in Merrillville anymore with the LPR’s in place.” “We have a group of highly motivated and well trained officers to take these subjects to jail. Our officers are doing an excellent job catching the criminals so we hope the legal system does the same,” Nuses added.
Charges will be presented to the prosecutor on Tuesday after the holiday, Nuses stated.
