NIPSCO Scam In Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Police responded to the report of a potential scam occurring in the 400 block of Center St., at approximately 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. The scam involves the use of multiple subjects who arrive at a residence, under the pretext to provide a service or check related equipment within the home.

In the event that occurred Tuesday, the subjects claimed to be with NIPSCO, however had no uniforms, no identification, and arrived in a white pick-up truck with no markings. Both males were described as Hispanic, 30-40 years of age, and short in stature. One of the males was allowed to enter the home to reportedly check an interior meter, while a second male was located in the back yard. The male who was inside of the home had unlocked the rear door prior to the second male being located. As the reporting party became suspicious and uncooperative, both men left the area, making no attempt to check a meter or provide a service.


NIPSCO confirmed the presence of crews in the area; however, not crews that would have been performing these types of checks. NIPSCO further reported that their employees would carry identification and would be in marked vehicles.

Please be cautious and aware of this type of behavior and report any suspicious activity to the Valparaiso Police Department. Police ask that anyone who may have video of these individuals to contact us at their earliest convenience. Detectives can be reached at 219-462-2135.
