One Shot At Michigan City Beach Monday

UPDATE – The LaPorte County E-911 Regional Dispatch Center received several 911 calls on May 30th at approximately 4:10 PM regarding shots being fired on the beach near Stop 2, according to Michigan City Police.

Michigan City Police Officers working Memorial Day beach patrol along with multiple officers on shift quickly responded to Washington Park Stop 2 and learned that one subject had been shot. LaPorte County EMS arrived on scene and immediately transported the subject to Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers canvased the area and received information from the Regional Dispatch Center that a tan vehicle could possibly be involved in the incident. Officers responding to the area located a vehicle matching the description given by the Dispatch Center driving east on Lakeshore Dr. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued to flee from police east on Lakeshore Dr. The vehicle came to a stop in the 1600 Block of Lakeshore Dr and a subject later identified as Julius Bowen, an 18-year-old, Michigan City resident, fled the vehicle north on foot, carrying what appeared to be two (2) handguns. Bowen was apprehended after a short foot pursuit along with two (2) handguns. Bowen was arrested and charged with Resisting Law Enforcement A-Misdemeanor, and Possession of a Handgun Without a License A-Misdemeanor x 2.

The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old, Michigan City resident, Donald Deal, was arrested and charged with Resisting Law Enforcement Level 6 Felony and Operating a Vehicle Without Ever Receiving a License C-Misdemeanor.

Late Monday evening, a person of interest turned themselves into the Michigan City Police Department regarding the shooting at Washington Park Stop 2. That subject was identified as 20- year-old, Michigan City resident, DeMarco Nichols. Lead Detective Lieutenant Anna Painter forwarded her investigation to the LaPorte County Prosecutors Office for probable cause review. LaPorte County Superior Court #1 Judge Jamie Oss found probable cause to charge Nichols with Aggravated Battery Level 3 Felony. Nichols was issued a $25,000 cash bond.

Multiple officers quickly responded to Washington Park Stop 2 and learned that one subject had been shot. LaPorte County EMS arrived on scene and immediately transported the subject to Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers canvased the area and began to look for evidence and witnesses.

Witnesses were interviewed by officers at the scene to gather more information regarding this incident and Detectives were called in to assist. Detectives continue to interview witnesses, attempt to identify any suspect(s), search for video surveillance in the area and process evidence collected at the scene. No other information was being released Monday evening.
